Finding Purpose in Pain

“Why God?” It’s a question that echoes in the hearts of many when facing the trials and tribulations of life. If you’re like me, you've pondered this question during your most challenging moments. I asked "Why God?" when my sister lost her son, not fathoming that just seven months later, I would experience a similar heartbreak with the loss of my own son. I cried out "Why God?" when I found myself in an abusive relationship, feeling trapped and powerless. And I asked "Why God?" when my children went through their own mental health crises, grappling with pain and uncertainty.

These questions can feel overwhelming, and at times, they lead us into a pit of despair. However, I have come to realize that these trials, as painful as they may be, are part of a greater narrative that God is weaving through our lives.

The Purpose Behind Our Pain

It’s important to remember that our struggles do not go unnoticed by God. Romans 8:28 reminds us, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” This verse carries profound truth: even in our darkest moments, God is at work. He uses our messes to bring us closer to Him, to strengthen our faith, and ultimately, to prepare us to help others who may walk a similar path. Our experiences may serve as testimonies, illuminating the way for someone else who is lost in their struggle.

When we encounter hardship, it can be comforting to lean on the words of 2 Corinthians 1:3-4, which tells us, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble.” Our trials equip us with empathy, allowing us to offer support and understanding to others grappling with their own pain.

The Power of Trust and Leaning on God

During my own journey, I’ve prayed, “Father, I know that you have my best interest at heart. I know that you want me to undoubtedly lean on You and trust You through everything, both good and bad.” Trusting God through trials is one of the greatest challenges we face, yet it is also one of the most vital components of our faith. It reminds us that we are not in control, and that’s okay.

When we allow ourselves to remain anchored in His presence, we gain the strength needed to endure life’s storms. Psalm 46:1 assures us, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” In moments of pain, God provides us with a safe haven, encouraging us to lean into Him—our rock and fortress.

A Heart of Gratitude in Trials

As I reflect on my own experiences, I find myself thankful for the trials in my life. It’s not easy to express gratitude during hardship, but James 1:2-4 encourages us to, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Instead of drawing us away from God, our trials can deepen our relationship with Him. They can refine our character, teach us resilience, and mold us into vessels of His grace. Each difficulty prepares us for the next chapter of our lives—a journey toward greater reliance on Him.

A Prayer for Strength and Growth

In my prayer, I often include this plea: “God, please help me remain in You when going through tough times. Don’t let me lose sight of You and Your promises. Continue to grow me and work on my trust in You.” Seeking His presence in our struggles fosters hope, reminding us that no trial is wasted.

In Conclusion: Embracing the Journey

To every woman reading this, know that it’s perfectly natural to ask “Why God?” during difficult moments. You are not alone in your struggles, and your questions are valid. Embrace this journey of faith, trusting that God is working behind the scenes for your good.

Let’s encourage each other to lean into our struggles, knowing they serve a purpose. Our stories, though filled with heartache, can shine a light into the lives of others. And as we navigate through our trials, let’s cling to His promises, allowing Him to transform our pain into something beautiful.

May we grow stronger in our faith, confident that our God is with us every step of the way—turning our messes into marvelous testimonies of His grace.
